Panels, an inverter and a battery are not the whole installation. The conductors, switching equipment and protective devices connecting them affect safe operation and serviceability. A quote should identify this work clearly rather than leaving it behind the phrase “installation included.”

Different circuits have different requirements
The PV array, battery, AC supply and backup circuits operate under different electrical conditions. An installer must select cables and protective equipment for each circuit using its design current, voltage, installation method and equipment requirements. A cable size copied from another property is not a design.
Understand the protection categories
- Overcurrent protection: selected to protect the relevant circuit under specified fault conditions.
- Isolation: appropriate disconnecting arrangements for service and emergency procedures.
- Surge protection: coordinated devices where required by the design and applicable requirements.
- Earthing and bonding: an intentional protective arrangement for exposed conductive equipment and the electrical system.
A surge protective device is not a guarantee against every lightning event, and it does not replace properly designed earthing or other required protection.
Ask for an itemised scope
Request the proposed cable routes, included protection, mounting work, distribution-board changes and commissioning checks. Ask who will label the circuits and explain the shutdown sequence. Where equipment is sold separately, establish whether wiring, mounting and labour are included in the accepted order.
Frequently asked questions
Can an ordinary AC breaker be used on a PV circuit?
Do not substitute devices. The designer must verify the device’s DC rating and suitability for the actual voltage, current and arrangement.
Can I disconnect panel connectors while troubleshooting?
Leave fault finding to a competent technician. PV circuits can remain energised in daylight, and improper disconnection can cause dangerous arcing.
This guide helps you assess a quotation; it is not a wiring instruction. Explore professional installation and diagnostics or request a scope review.
